Passions animales
2021
In this article, questions concerning the relationship between semiotics and ethology will be discussed, starting from the idea of internaturality circulating in contemporary culture. After outlining the principles of a zoosemiotic 2.0, a case of animism present in the current press will be analysed, which speaks of the passions of apes as typically human passions.

The Representation of Roma in the Romanian Media During COVID-19: Performing Control Through Discursive-Performative Repertoires
2021
This article investigates the narratives employed by the Romanian media in covering the development of COVID-19 in Roma communities in Romania. This paper aims to contribute to academic literature on Romani studies, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe, by adopting as its case study the town of Ţăndărei, a small town in the south of Romania, which in early 2020 was widely reported by Romanian media during both the pre- and post-quarantine period. The contributions rest on anchoring the study in post-foundational theory and media studies to understand the performativity of Roma identity and the discursive-performative practices of control employed by the Romania media in the first half…
Mocking fakeness
2022
Abstract Phonetic resources, like dialects and accents, are used in ethnic humour to build up a recognisable character that pokes fun at the stereotypes associated with a particular identity, sometimes with critical and political undertones. In this article, we examine the manipulation of one such resource, aspiration, used in performing and mocking one such clichéd character, called the fake Sámi. This character has a contested history in Finnish tourism and marketing practices, and is embedded in a long-standing debate about who can use emblems of Sámi identity for economic purposes. Adopting a sociophonetic language regard and folk linguistics approaches (Preston 2010; Niedzielski & …
Blade runners and daredevils : a case study on the representation of two Paralympians in The Guardian
2015
Paralympialaiset ja vammaisurheilu jäävät mediassa usein “vammattomien” urheilun uutisoinnin varjoon. Aiempien tutkimusten mukaan median luomat representaatiot usein myös vahvistavat stereotypioita vammaisista. Erilaisilla kielenkäyttötavoilla, ts. diskursseilla, joilla näitä urheilijoita kuvataan, onkin olennaisesti vaikutusta esimerkiksi siihen, millaiseksi fyysisesti vammaiset kokevat tulevansa kohdelluksi yhteiskunnassa. Tämän takia onkin tärkeää kiinnittää huomiota median luomiin kuviin. Tutkielmassa käsitellään vammaisurheilijoiden representaatiota brittiläislehti The Guardianissa. Analysoin kahta lehden internet-versiossa julkaistua artikkelia, joista toinen käsittelee pikajuoksija O…
Mobilising Consumers for Food Waste Reduction in Finnish Media Discourse
2019
Raippalinna explores how consumers are mobilised for food waste reduction in media discourse. Food waste reduction initiatives are often criticised for putting the responsibility on individual consumers, but little research exists on the mobilisation of consumers in actual contexts. Through critical discourse analysis of media texts, Raippalinna investigates how the food waste problem and consumers are constructed in relation to each other in Finlands leading newspaper Helsingin Sanomat 2010–2017. The analysis demonstrates that the discourses of consumer mobilisation appear mostly as consumer education where the consumer’s role is to manage individual consumption and household practices. Th…
The advantages of applying the concept of rhetorical style in language-oriented Journalism Studies
2016
This article begins with a delineation of the context of contemporary professional joumalism, particularly its markel-driven, technologically advanced and discursively diverse character. Journalism studies scholars trace media evolution with the aid of content analyses. On the other hand, linguists, including stylisticians, try to capture recent changes in media language with the use of qualitative methods, e.g., with categories derived from discourse analysis, which enable them to see how hegemonie discourses are (re)constructed in journalistic texts. This article elaborates on the category of rhetorical style and shows its applicability to the studies of various media “rhetorics.” Followi…
"Fallible, sentimental and ruled by contradictory impulses" : representations of female pop artists in The Guardian's online news articles
2017
Kieli ja kielenkäytön tavat eli diskurssit vaikuttavat asenteisiin, toimintatapoihin ja todellisuuskäsityksiin yhteiskunnallisellakin tasolla. Koska joukkotiedotusvälineet, kuten sanomalehdet, radio ja televisio, levittävät diskursseja laajalle yleisölle, on tärkeää tutkia, millaisia asenteita, arvoja ja ideologioita median käyttämään kieleen sisältyy. Tällaiseen kielen- ja mediantutkimukseen on hyödyllistä soveltaa kriittistä diskurssianalyysiä, jolla voidaan havainnoida muun muassa vallan väärinkäyttöä, ylivaltaa ja eriarvoisuutta. Media tuottaa kielen kautta representaatioita todellisuudesta. Tämän tutkielman tavoitteena oli määrittää, millaisia representaatioita naispuolisista pop-artis…
Representation of a politician in Finnish media : a case study
2012
Diskurssin analyysissa tutkitaan kieltä kontekstissa, eli miten kieltä käytetään ja mihin tarkoitukseen. Tämä tutkielma keskittyy suomalaisten valtamedioiden kielenkäyttöön ja erityisesti siihen, miten suomalaiset valtamediat kuvaavat suomalaista poliitikkoa Jussi Halla-ahoa. Tutkielmassa otettiin huomioon myös ulkomainen valtamedia vertaimella suomalaisia mediatekstejä venäläisen valtamedian englanninkieliseen mediatekstiin. Tutkimuskysymyksiä oli kaksi: 1. Kuinka suomalainen valtamedia kuvaa Jussi Halla-ahoa, ja 2. Kuinka ulkomainen valtamedia kuvaa Jussi Halla-ahoa. Tämä tutkielma on laadullinen tutkielma, jossa pyritään tekstien tarkkaan lähiluentaan. Teoreettisena viitekehyksenä toimii…
(De)Stigmatization of Political Leadership : The Case of a Right-Wing Populist Presidential Candidate in the Finnish Media
2020
In this article, we examine the discursive practices of (de)stigmatizing right-wing populist party leaders. We draw on a recent example from Finland by examining how the female presidential candidate of a right-wing populist party was portrayed in the Finnish media during the 2018 presidential campaign season. We examine the stigmatization by the press media and the stigma-management tactics used by the presidential candidate to resist stigmatization. The media representation of the right-wing party leader is highly tensioned, and the media positions her political leadership within the duality of charisma and stigma. In our analysis, we extend earlier literature by unveiling the emotional t…
